Project Overview: Understated Elegance by the Coast

Located in the tranquil seaside village of Cemagi, Bali, Kite Villas represents a seamless union between coastal modernism and natural materiality. Commissioned by private client Borian, the objective of this project was clear: to craft an interior that breathes, soothes, and blends harmoniously with the surrounding nature. Mafaza Living was appointed to bring this vision to life through a series of custom-crafted furniture pieces designed specifically for one of the villa’s main bedrooms.

The result is a curated space defined by gentle forms, light-soaked surfaces, and textures that feel organic yet refined. At its core, the Kite Villas bedroom is a testament to the power of minimalist luxury, a restrained aesthetic that speaks volumes through thoughtful details.

Design Philosophy: Quiet Confidence in Every Corner

Our design intent centered around subtle spatial rhythm, the kind that invites calm, encourages light, and celebrates texture. We approached this project not as decorators but as storytellers of material and proportion.

From the moment you enter the room, a sense of visual softness envelops you. The muted color palette, comprising sandy tones, warm wood finishes, and soft white upholstery, reflects the coastal atmosphere of Cemagi. Rather than making bold visual statements, we allowed the furniture to serve the space: enhancing function, clarifying layout, and anchoring the architecture.

We believe that true luxury lies not in opulence, but in intentional restraint. Every line, curve, and surface in Kite Villas was designed with this philosophy in mind.

Bespoke Wardrobe: Rattan Meets Craftsmanship

The first feature guests encounter is the custom rattan wardrobe, which spans the entrance to the bedroom. Made entirely from solid teak with a natural woven rattan insert, the piece adds both tactile depth and breathable lightness to the space.

The cabinet doors are equipped with soft-close hinges and rounded wooden handles, both of which nod to classic design values while serving contemporary usability. The subtle perforation of the rattan allows for ventilation, making it ideal for Bali’s humid climate while preserving the integrity of stored garments.

This piece isn’t just storage, it’s sculpture. The cabinet not only functions as a practical necessity, but it also defines the circulation path between the entrance and the bed, acting as both boundary and backdrop.

The Bed: Comfort, Reimagined

At the center of the room lies the bespoke white fabric bed, handcrafted to embody plush serenity. The bed frame features a fully upholstered base in soft, looped bouclé fabric, a material chosen for its visual texture, comfort, and luxurious feel.

The headboard is vertically tufted in a gentle arc, offering support while echoing the lines of the architecture above. Its tall, yet soft presence brings visual height without imposing heaviness.

Every stitch, seam, and panel was produced in-house by Mafaza Living’s textile artisans in Jepara, ensuring not just aesthetic appeal but long-lasting structure and comfort. The final result is a piece that invites rest while contributing to the spatial clarity and emotional tone of the room.

Material Narrative: Sourced Sustainably, Built to Last

The material selection for Kite Villas was guided by our core principle: sustainable luxury. We used only legally sourced teak, certified rattan harvested by local weavers, and premium foam and fabric selected for durability in coastal conditions.

Every wood component was sealed with water-based finishing to ensure longevity and low VOC emissions, supporting indoor air quality. For upholstery, we opted for high-resilience foam and durable boucle textile, both chosen for their comfort and tactile charm.

Each piece was tested to withstand the tropical climate of Bali without compromising on softness or performance.

Space Planning: Clean Layout, Clear Flow

One of the most understated yet impactful elements in this project was the layout design. The room opens toward expansive glass doors with a view of the rice fields beyond. We ensured that no furniture obstructed this visual axis, allowing nature to play an active role in the interior.

The bedside tables were designed as compact cylindrical forms, custom-turned from solid wood with soft matte finishes. Their unobtrusive presence supports the bed’s design without demanding visual attention.

The flooring, a warm-toned woodgrain tile, ties everything together, creating continuity and grounding the furniture within the space.

Client Collaboration: Building Trust Through Design

Working closely with Mr. Borian, we ensured every decision aligned with the overall design intent and the client's vision for a peaceful villa escape. From initial design consultations and on-site surveys to remote coordination and precise installation, this project was a true collaboration.

Mr. Borian’s trust in our ability to balance artistic direction with practical execution allowed us to deliver results that were both aesthetic and deeply personal.

Challenges & Solutions: Climate + Craft

Given the coastal location of Cemagi, all furniture was engineered to resist moisture absorption and material degradation. Our internal joinery team adapted classic dovetail and mortise techniques to modern needs, while also incorporating reinforced support in high-contact areas like bed frames and drawer runners.

Delivery and installation were completed in phases to accommodate the villa’s construction timeline, ensuring seamless integration without disruption to the architecture or workflow.

Final Thoughts: Designed to Breathe

Kite Villas is more than a furniture project, it is an expression of intentional living. From the moment you walk through the entrance to the final glance toward the landscape outside, every piece was designed to complement, not compete. The room is quiet, open, and balanced, inviting its occupants to truly inhabit the space without distraction.

This project serves as a proud representation of Mafaza Living’s capabilities in high-end residential design, tailored, durable, and rich in detail.
